A clinician, a program, a platform—whatever shape it takes—almost never loses power by admitting wrongdoing. It loses power when it loses the narrative. And so it does something more efficient: it rebrands using our critique.

This is why Misbehaviorism is not a niche concept. It’s not a one-off misconduct case or a single practitioner “mistake.” Misbehaviorism is an institutional survival tactic: co-opt critique, repaint the packaging, keep the same enforcement logic underneath.

• Language changes overnight (trauma-informed, neuroaffirmative, family-centered)

• Metrics get re-labeled as “well-being,” while the underlying targets remain compliance

• “Safety” becomes an aesthetic, not a practice

Parents Must Learn to Identify Misbehaviorism for Themselves

There is a dangerous cultural assumption surrounding ABA institutions and “behavioral services”: If it is clinical, insurance-funded, school-approved, university-backed, or presented as “evidence-based,” then parents are expected to trust it automatically.

That assumption is precisely why public activism around misbehaviorism matters.

Not because every practitioner is malicious.
Not because every child has the same needs.
Not because every parent will make the same choices.

But because parents cannot make informed choices unless they are equipped to recognize coercion, humiliation, boundary violations, and institutional conditioning when they see it.

And increasingly, they are being trained not to see it.

The problem is not simply “bad actors.”
The problem is an entire professional culture that normalizes compliance extraction while pathologizing resistance.

The article “Take Off Your Shirt: When Compliance Training Crosses the Line Into Harm” documents a pattern that many autistic people immediately recognize: the erosion of bodily autonomy under the banner of therapeutic authority.

When children are conditioned that adults may override discomfort, demand submission, ignore hesitation, or treat refusal as pathology, the lesson extends far beyond therapy.

It becomes social training.

And parents are often told this is necessary for “functioning,” “independence,” or “success.”

But informed consent cannot exist where parents are denied the conceptual tools to identify coercive frameworks in the first place.

That is why activism matters.

Not slogan activism.
Not branding campaigns.
Not institutional “awareness months.”

Actual literacy.

Parents must learn how to ask:

• Is this teaching a skill — or teaching obedience?

• Is my child allowed to refuse?

• What happens when they say no?

• Is distress treated as communication, or as noncompliance?

• Is bodily autonomy respected only when convenient?

• Are natural autistic behaviors framed as defects to extinguish?

• Is “calm body” language masking forced suppression?

• Are rewards and punishments replacing authentic communication?

• Is consent reversible?

• Would this intervention be considered acceptable if done to a non-disabled child?

These are not extremist questions.

These are baseline ethical questions.

And many institutions do not want parents asking them.

Because once parents begin recognizing misbehaviorism, entire professional narratives become unstable.

Parents begin noticing:

• scripted compliance drills,

• forced eye contact,

• demand fading that ignores distress,

• token economies attached to basic dignity,

• suppression of stimming,

• “planned ignoring” during emotional overwhelm,

• and the treatment of resistance itself as evidence that more conditioning is needed.

They begin realizing that “evidence-based” does not automatically mean humane.

History is filled with institutional practices that were “evidence-based” before society recognized them as harmful.

Professional consensus is not morality.

Insurance reimbursement is not morality.

University affiliation is not morality.

And “free” is certainly not morality.

Parents especially need permission to understand this:

You are allowed to say no to services even when they are free.

Free services are not free if the cost is your child learning:

• that compliance matters more than safety,

• that discomfort must be hidden,

• that adults own their body,

• that authentic communication is dangerous,

• or that masking is required for acceptance.

The pressure on families is enormous.
Parents are frightened.
They are often isolated.
They are told early intervention is urgent.
They are warned that refusal may doom their child’s future.

Under those conditions, institutional authority becomes coercive even without explicit force.

That is why public criticism of ABA institutions is not merely “controversy.”

It is consumer protection.
It is disability rights advocacy.
It is informed consent advocacy.
It is anti-coercion advocacy.

Most importantly, it is educational activism.

Because the goal is not to force every parent into identical decisions.

The goal is to ensure parents can actually recognize what they are consenting to.

A parent who understands misbehaviorism may still choose certain supports.
But they do so with eyes open.

That changes everything.

The future of autistic advocacy depends less on institutional messaging and more on whether ordinary parents can independently identify coercive conditioning when it is presented as care.

Once they can see it, the spell breaks.

And institutions that relied on blind trust suddenly have to answer questions they were never prepared to face.

Kaelynn Partlow doesn’t seem like she’d have haters. The friendly, energetic 29-year-old is best known for appearing on Love on the Spectrum, the Netflix reality show about the joy and agony of dating as an autistic person. These days, she lives in Greenville, South Carolina, and works with autistic kids. She also gives talks around the country and has developed a huge following on social media, where she posts videos debunking misconceptions about autism and offering advice for interacting with autistic people.

Yet Partlow has a tendency to make people mad online. There was the time she posted a video in which a colleague purposely mispronounced Zohran Mamdani’s name, drawing accusations of racism. Or when she used the phrase “human meat puppet” to refer to the practice of helping autistic people use certain types of assisted communication. Or when she suggested that highly articulate autistic people like herself aren’t given as much grace as those with low verbal skills. She deleted or apologized after each of these missteps, all of which could be chalked up to the classic autistic difficulty with reading a room.

But to some of her detractors, those gaffes aren’t the worst of it. Critics consistently object to her earnest endorsement of a form of autism therapy called applied behavior analysis, or ABA. Partlow was hyperactive and distracted as a child, and she struggled with dyslexia and dyscalculia. “I failed the third grade, which you wouldn’t think you could do, but I did,” she says. After that, she was diagnosed with autism. She tried a few different kinds of therapy over the years—occupational therapy, speech language therapy—but eventually embraced ABA.

They argue that the state has already agreed to fund their child’s medically necessary care and has authorized specific hours of service, but cannot find anyone to deliver them. One parent, Katie Scheid, left her job to care for her daughter, who qualifies for 185 hours of personal care per month due to cerebral palsy. The issue, as framed by the plaintiffs, is not whether care should be funded, but what happens when the system cannot supply the workforce required to deliver it.

The case (W.D. Wash., Case No. 358192) is a federal class action brought by parents of children with significant disabilities, many of whom require intensive, often continuous supervision . The central allegation is that Washington is violating federal Medicaid law by authorizing in-home care services but failing to actually provide them. According to the complaint, the state approves hours of care that go unfilled due to workforce shortages, leaving families with what amounts to “paper benefits.” Parents then absorb the care themselves, often exiting the workforce and incurring financial strain, while the state maintains a policy that generally bars parents of minors from being paid providers even when no alternative exists.

The plaintiffs’ legal theory draws on Medicaid’s “reasonable promptness” requirement, arguing that prolonged inability to staff services amounts to a constructive denial. They also invoke access and comparability rules, asserting that a benefit that cannot be used is not meaningful access, as well as ADA and Olmstead principles requiring care in the least restrictive setting, which they argue is undermined when in-home services are unavailable.

From that framework, the plaintiffs advance a conditional claim: when no providers are available, parents should be recognized and paid as caregivers of last resort. They are seeking not only system reforms to ensure services are actually delivered, but also the option for parent compensation under those circumstances, alongside court enforcement of federal Medicaid obligations . The complaint repeatedly emphasizes that this is not a request to pay parents for ordinary caregiving, but for medically necessary services already approved by the state.

The underlying factual premise is a severe and persistent direct-care workforce shortage, with families reporting months or years without staffing and an inability to hire providers at all. The state’s counterposition, however, turns on a different reading of Medicaid law: that it guarantees coverage of services, not a right to be paid or to substitute oneself as a provider. Under that view, a failure of access triggers system-level reform, not automatic expansion of eligibility to include parents as compensated caregivers.

The Parallel in California

At the same time, California operates a system that has already adopted the model Washington plaintiffs are seeking. Through its In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program, California permits beneficiaries to hire caregivers directly, including family members and, in many cases, parents.

That system has scaled significantly. Over roughly a decade, IHSS spending has increased from approximately $8.2 billion to an estimated $28.5 billion annually. This growth is defended by the state as consistent with federal policy encouraging a shift from institutional care to home- and community-based services.

Yet that same expansion has triggered federal scrutiny. In January 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requested a detailed program integrity action plan from California, focusing on expenditure growth and structural risks within the program. CMS has not challenged the underlying policy of home-based care. The concern is narrower and more structural.

Medicaid requires that reimbursed services be medically necessary, defined, and verifiable. As programs expand, especially those relying on self-directed care and family caregivers, those requirements become harder to maintain.

California’s response to CMS emphasizes oversight mechanisms: audits, electronic timesheets, fraud detection systems, and enforcement actions. These tools are allegedly designed to confirm that billed services were performed. They are less effective at addressing whether the services themselves are sufficiently bounded to qualify as medical assistance.

This issue becomes most visible in service categories built around continuous supervision. When authorized care consists of ongoing monitoring rather than discrete clinical tasks, reimbursement is tied to time rather than intervention. The distinction between compensable service and general caregiving becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.

Washington’s refusal to broadly authorize parent payment can be understood in this context. The state is not disputing that care is needed or that families are absorbing unmet demand. It is maintaining a narrower boundary: that the absence of an available provider does not automatically convert a parent into a reimbursable one.

This position reflects a different interpretation of Medicaid’s structure. Under this view, Medicaid guarantees coverage of defined services, but it does not guarantee the availability of a workforce, nor does it require that beneficiaries or their families be substituted as providers when shortages arise.

The Structural Tension

The dispute between the Washington plaintiffs and the state turns on whether access to services includes not only authorization but fulfillment. The plaintiffs argue that failure to deliver services triggers an obligation to recognize parents as providers. The state treats that step as a categorical shift, not a logistical adjustment.

California’s experience illustrates the implications of resolving that tension in favor of substitution. Incorporating parents as providers at scale changes how services are defined, how they are monitored, and how program growth occurs. Oversight moves toward verifying hours rather than adjudicating medical necessity, and the boundary between service provision and caregiving becomes less distinct.

Federal scrutiny of California suggests concern with that trajectory, even as the broader policy direction toward home-based care remains intact. The Washington case presents the same structural question at an earlier stage. It asks whether a state must adapt its payment model when service delivery fails, or whether it may maintain a stricter boundary around who qualifies as a Medicaid provider.

The outcome will not resolve the underlying tension between access and definition. It will determine how that tension is managed—either by expanding the set of reimbursable providers or by preserving a narrower conception of what Medicaid is intended to fund.

The story parents were told: “gold standard” ABA, community‑oriented care

Comprehensive Autism Center (CAC) was founded in 2008 by Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Andrea “Andi” Macken in Southern California . CAC built a business around in‑home and center‑based ABA targeting infants, toddlers, and young autistic children across San Diego, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Clara, Monterey, and San Benito counties.

In a national press release about the company’s later sale, CAC’s services were described as “clinically proven, community‑oriented, and outcome‑tracking treatments” and as an “industry leading approach to ABA therapy”.

Investors and advisers praised Andrea “Andi” Macken and the CAC clinical team for creating a “gold standard in ABA” and for supposedly shaping “the future of the industry in an incredibly positive way”.

The 2019–2020 sale: Comprehensive Autism Center becomes an investment asset

By late 2019, Comprehensive Autism Center was no longer just a local San Diego autism clinic. It became a financial asset purchased by a private‑equity‑backed consolidator.

• In December 2019, Comprehensive Autism Center was acquired by the Speech Pathology Group (SPG), described as “a portfolio company of Ridgemont Equity Partners”.

• The release, issued from Boston and Los Angeles, makes clear that this was a buyout, with Provident Healthcare Partners serving as exclusive financial advisor to Comprehensive Autism Center.

• Deal commentary emphasizes that the transaction would give Andrea and Chris Macken and CAC “the resources to…impact far more families in Southern California and beyond”.

In other words, the ABA clinic where San Diego parents brought their autistic children for therapy was folded into a larger private‑equity structure, controlled not by local families, but by Ridgemont Equity Partners and their portfolio company, The Speech Pathology Group.

Unison Therapy Services: another ownership change on top of your child’s care

The consolidation did not stop there. Ridgemont Equity Partners later reorganized its autism and developmental disability companies into Unison Therapy Services, grouping together SPG Therapy & Education and Comprehensive Autism Center.

By 2025, another investor, Ascend Capital Partners, announced that it had purchased Unison Therapy Services and held a majority stake in the platform. That means the clinic where your child might receive ABA in San Diego is at least two layers removed from its original founder and structurally accountable to private‑equity returns, not to your family or the autistic community.

The reality in 2026: WARN notices, permanent closures, and layoffs

On paper and on Yelp, Comprehensive Autism Center – 3655 Ruffin Rd Ste 100, San Diego, CA 92123 looks like just another friendly autism clinic, described as offering ABA programs for children and individualized ABA that “begins with an assessment” and focuses on “the unique abilities of each child”.

But in 2026, California WARN Act records tell a different story :

• The California WARN Act filing for Comprehensive Autism Center lists 3655 Ruffin Rd, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92123 as a “Closure / Permanent” event, with 35 employees affected.

• A national industry outlet reports that Comprehensive Autism Center will close two of its three clinics, resulting in 62 employees laid off at two Southern California locations, effective May 31, 2026.

• That same coverage notes that Comprehensive Autism Center, founded in 2008 by Andrea Macken, will continue operating only one clinic in Temecula, California while closing the other two clinics.

For families in the San Diego area, the ABA clinic that sold itself as stable, community‑oriented, and backed by “gold standard” care has now issued permanent closure notices and mass layoffs at the Ruffin Road location.

• Has this company filed WARN notices or announced closures or layoffs in California?

• Does the clinic pressure you into intensive ABA hours and long contracts, and ask you to leave your child unattended during ‘therapy’ ?

Parents deserve full transparency about who profits from their child’s diagnosis and what happens when investors decide the numbers no longer work. You do not have to accept that ABA is your only option or that your child’s support should be tied to private‑equity business models. Autistic‑led, non‑behaviorist, rights‑respecting supports exist precisely because autistic people have documented these patterns of harm and closure.

What followed was not argument, but observation. The same principles used to interpret and shape behavior were extended into the public domain and applied without reinforcement, without participation, and without interference. Under those conditions, the model did not stabilize behavior as expected.

Within these conditions, the response developed without external shaping. Communication intensified, attention shifted toward the practitioner, and the interaction reorganized around managing the exchange rather than addressing the initial subject of critique.

The significance of this method lies in what it makes visible. When a system is observed without participation, its ability to redirect, absorb, or stabilize critique is reduced. What remains is the pattern of behavior that emerges in the absence of those mechanisms.

It was shared by clinicians, reposted by advocacy organizations, and absorbed by parents who are already navigating a system that tells them early intervention is everything. The message was simple and reassuring: therapy works. Most children gain speech.

I read the study itself before commenting. The title was more restrained: “Proportion and Profile of Autistic Children Not Acquiring Spoken Language Despite Receiving Evidence-Based Early Interventions.” That is not a claim of efficacy. It is a descriptive study of outcomes among children who were already receiving intervention. There was no control group. The paper did not demonstrate that therapy caused speech acquisition. It documented that many children developed speech while enrolled in therapy. Those are not equivalent claims.

Two-Thirds of Non-Speaking Autistic Children Gained Speech — So What?

The difference matters because once causation is implied, responsibility shifts. If therapy “produces” speech, then a child who does not speak becomes evidence of insufficient intervention, delayed services, or parental failure. That narrative has consequences. Other autistic advocates were reading the paper at the same time. Conversations moved quickly. We compared the headline to the abstract. We looked at how “gained speech” was defined. We examined the NIH grant that funded the work. We asked what the study changed in practical terms for autistic people.

The grant, approximately $1.15 million over four years, was designed to examine “treatment non-responders” in early autism intervention. That framing is instructive. It positions the intervention model as the standard and the child as the variable. It assumes the treatment works and seeks to identify those who fail to benefit. That may be a legitimate research question within a treatment paradigm. It is not necessarily the priority autistic adults have been requesting when we speak about housing, employment, healthcare access, trauma-informed care, or communication autonomy.

As the article developed, I revised it to remove unnecessary personal commentary. The focus needed to remain on systems — funding priorities, translational framing, and the predictable drift from cautious publication to celebratory headline. The goal was not to accuse researchers of misconduct. The study is real. It was peer-reviewed. The concern is how quickly descriptive data was translated into a causal narrative.

We have seen this pattern before. A study documents variability. A press release emphasizes hope. Media outlets amplify the optimistic interpretation. Over time, the interpretation hardens into accepted truth. Once embedded, it becomes difficult to challenge without appearing oppositional to science itself.

This response was not about discrediting research. It was about insisting on precision. Publicly funded science carries weight beyond the journal in which it appears. When federal dollars are involved, the public has the right to ask whether the research priorities reflect the needs of the population in whose name the funding was justified.

I am speaking now because the downstream effects are predictable. Parents will read the headline and assume therapy guarantees speech. Policymakers will cite it when defending intervention mandates. Providers will incorporate it into presentations. If the data do not support a causal claim, then allowing that claim to circulate unchallenged is not neutral.

The central question remains straightforward: does this research materially improve the autonomy and quality of life of autistic people, or does it primarily refine an intervention pipeline that has already dominated federal funding for decades?

That is not hostility toward science. It is participation in it.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a medicalized behavior-modification model. Its purpose is to measure, shape, reduce, or replace behavior using compliance targets, reinforcement, extinction, and data collection.

That is not academic learning.
It is treatment.

Children in full-day ABA settings are not receiving real education. They are not receiving a general education curriculum, peer-based learning, certified teaching, or meaningful access to academics. They are receiving behavior plans.

Disabled children have a right to education, not therapy disguised as school.

When a child is pulled out of public or private school and placed into full-time ABA, that child is being denied educational access. Therapy does not replace school. Behavior goals do not replace curriculum. Data sheets do not replace teachers.

Be very cautious of programs calling themselves an “autism-focused school.” Common red flags include BCBA-run classrooms, behavior goals instead of academics, language about “compliance,” “readiness,” or “replacement behaviors,” and no clear accreditation, curriculum, grades, or diploma pathway.

This is ABA rebranding, not innovation.

Medicalizing autistic behavior causes harm. When distress, sensory needs, or communication differences are treated as problems to be fixed, children are taught to mask, comply, and suppress themselves. This increases trauma and reduces autonomy.

Children learn best when they are safe, respected, and supported — not conditioned.

Parents deserve honesty.
If it’s therapy, call it therapy.
If it’s school, prove it’s school.

Autistic children deserve real education, inclusion, dignity, and rights — not behavior control programs in disguise.
